Training
at the Scootech School
Scootech’s
DSA-approved training school can teach you to ride anything from a scooter
to a superbike. We offer a complete range of courses, all specifically
designed to make sure you get the licence you want in as short a time
as possible.
Our expert team of
DSA-qualified instructors will guide, coax and encourage you through every
aspect of your training and have an excellent first-time pass rate. They
are sensitive to your needs/nerves and won’t push you at a faster
rate than you feel comfortable with. You don’t need to have ridden
a motor bike before, but it’s a good idea to be familiar with the
highway code.

do I need and what can I ride?
16 year olds – Provisional licence + CBT Certificate =
ride 50cc moped with L-plates, no passengers.
17 year-olds and above – Provisional licence + CBT = ride scooter
or geared bike up to 125cc with L-plates, no passengers.

= ride 50 cc, no L plates, can carry passengers. With CBT – ride

Car licence holder – Licence issued after 1st Feb. 2001 –
ride up to 125cc, L-plates, no passengers but must have CBT
2. What does the CBT course consist of?
The training day starts at 8.30 am at our training ground and usually
finishes between 3pm & 5pm. We can supply you with protective clothing
- helmet, gloves and waterproofs – at no extra charge. The day starts
with a talk from your instructor (a maximum of 4 students for each instructor)
in which he introduces you to the rules regarding clothing, helmets etc.
Then, you meet your motor scooter/bike! Your instructor will show you
the basic machine checks and explain how all the controls work, after
which you begin to learn basic riding skills, machine control –
through figures of 8, braking indicating, general manoeuvres. Once this
section has been completed to a safe level you will have a break.
After the break there is a further talk; on basic road skills, with emphasis
on safety, after which, provided both you and the instructor feel that
you are competent, you go out on the road for a minimum two-hour road
ride. For this there is a maximum of two students per instructor and you
are linked to your instructor via an earpiece in your helmet so that he
can talk to you. Provided all goes well, at the end of this ride you will
be issued with your CBT certificate.
The CBT course is training, not a test. Most people find that they enjoy
themselves.
3. Charges for CBT training
£100.00
on your own bike, which must be taxed and insured.
£120.00 on our bike, automatic or geared – includes collision
damage waver.
Includes CBT certificate, use of helmet and protective clothing –
if needed, and VAT.
4. Getting a Full Licence
Before you can move on from your CBT, you must pass the Motorcycle Theory
Test (even if you have passed a Car Theory Test) which consists of theory
and hazard perception tests. We can book this for you or you can book
it online at www.dsa.gov.uk
We can also sell you a CD Rom with interactive sample tests.
Once you have passed your theory test we can book your training for a
motorcycle practical test. As there are several motorcycle licence categories
and a wide range of experience and abilities, you need to call us to discuss
costs which can be anything from £150.00 for an accompanied re-test
day (including £50.00 test fee) to an all-inclusive £595.00
for a full DAS course plus CBT.
Motorcycle licence categories are as follows:
5. Moped Licence
You must be 16 and over, hold a CBT and have passed your motorcycle theory
test. You need to do your training and pass your Practical Test on a machine
up to 50cc. Once you pass your test you can ride a moped (up to 50cc)
without L-plates and carry a pillion passenger
6. A1 light motorcycle – max power 14.6 bhp
You must be over 17, hold a CBT certificate and have passed your
motorcycle theory test. You need to do your training and your test on
a machine between 75 & 125cc. Once you pass your test you can ride
up to a 125cc (provided its power does not exceed 14.6bhp) without L-plates
and carry a pillion passenger.
7. A2 Restricted
Licence –
max power 33bhp
Automatic (auto only) or Manual (manual or auto)
You must be over 17, hold a CBT certificate and have passed your motorcycle
theory test. You need to do your training and your test on a 125cc machine
which must have a design speed in excess of 102 kph. We always recommend
that you do an A2 rather than an A1 test. For practical purposes, this
allows you to train on a similar machine to an A1 requirement but allows
you to ride a bigger machine in the future if you want to, without taking
another test. The A2 ‘Restriction’ lasts for two years only, after
which you can automatically upgrade your licence to a full category A
licence without further training or test, and which allows you to ride
any bike you want. The exception to this rule is that if you reach the
age of 21 while still within the 2 year restricted period, you can take
an Accelerated Access Practical Test on a bike capable of 47 bhp or more
to obtain a full category A licence.
8. Category
‘A’ Unrestricted Licence (Direct Access)
You must be over 21, hold a CBT certificate and have passed your motorcycle
theory test. You need to do your training and Practical Test on a machine
with a minimum power output of 46.6 bhp. Once you have passed your Practical
Test, you can ride any machine without L-plates and carry a pillion passenger.
Please note that you can only train on an over-46.6 bhp bike when accompanied
by an authorised Direct Access Instructor.
